Yes — but almost every "free AI answering service" is voicemail with a transcript, not a conversation. It records what the caller said and emails you the text. It does not answer questions, qualify the caller, book an appointment or transfer to you. Those things start at roughly $25–$50 a month across the market.
If your phone rings twice a week, free is genuinely fine. If missing one call costs you a job worth a few hundred dollars, free is the most expensive option you have.

What "free" usually means {#what-free-means}
There are three different things marketed as a free AI answering service, and they are not equivalent.
1. Voicemail with AI transcription. Your carrier or Google Voice records the message and turns it into text. Free, useful, and not an answering service — nobody spoke to your caller.
2. A free trial. Full product, 7 to 14 days, then you pay. Most vendors do this, including us. Honest, but not free.
3. A free tier of a paid product. A small monthly allowance of real calls, then charges. Rare in this category because voice minutes cost the vendor real money on every call.
Most search results for "free AI answering service" are category 1 dressed up as category 3.
The genuinely free options {#options}

Worth knowing about Google Voice specifically, since it is the most common free choice: it gives you one number per user, no toll-free numbers, no auto-replies on free or paid plans, and no integrations outside Google — so it will not write to HubSpot, Zoho or Zapier. What free cannot do {#cannot}
This is the part that matters. A free tool takes a message. It does not:
- Answer a question. "Do you cover my postcode?" gets a voicemail beep, not an answer.
- Book anything. The caller wanted an appointment. They got an invitation to wait.
- Qualify the caller. You still have to phone back to find out whether it was a real job or a sales call.
- Transfer to you. An urgent caller cannot reach a human, even when you are free.
- Answer more than one call at once. Two callers at the same time means one of them hears nothing.
Every one of those is a task you now do later, by hand, from a list of transcripts.
When free actually costs you money {#cost}
Here is the honest maths. It is not complicated.
Say you miss 9 calls a week. Say a quarter of answered calls turn into a customer. Say an average customer is worth $400.
That is 9 × 0.25 × $400 = $900 a week, or roughly $46,800 a year in work walking to whoever answered instead.
Against that, $45 a month is $540 a year.
The numbers only work the other way at genuinely low volume. If you miss one call a month, no service is worth paying for. The break-even is somewhere around 3 to 5 missed calls a month for most service businesses — below that, keep the free voicemail and your money.

FAQ {#faq}
Is there a completely free AI answering service? Not in the sense most people mean. Free tools transcribe voicemail — they do not hold a conversation, answer questions, book appointments or transfer calls. Free trials of the real thing typically run 7 to 14 days.
Can Google Voice answer my business calls automatically? Not on the free tier. Google Voice's auto attendant is only on paid business plans, and even then it routes calls by menu rather than holding a conversation. Auto-replies are unavailable on free and paid plans alike.
How much does a real AI answering service cost? Entry plans across the market run about $24.95 to $49 a month. Some bill per call, some per minute, some flat. Call Agent AI is $45/month flat with no overage.
Is a free trial enough to judge one? Yes, if you actually call it. Voice is the one thing you cannot evaluate from a website — set it up, ring it yourself, interrupt it mid-sentence and ask something awkward. That tells you more than any feature table.
When is free genuinely the right answer? When you miss very few calls, or when a missed call costs you little. A solo consultant whose phone rings twice a week should keep the free voicemail. A plumber missing nine calls a week should not.
